16th International Conference on Astronomical X-Ray Optics

1-5 December 2025 | Prague, Czech Republic

The primary objective of the conference is to showcase and exchange ideas regarding the latest and forthcoming technologies for missions in X-ray astronomy. These missions demand the creation of inventive technologies, and we aim to discuss the opportunities, the progress made until now, and novel concepts in depth.

Location

The 16th International Conference on Astronomical X-Ray Optics is held in Prague directly in Villa Lanna.

Prague, the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic, played a pivotal role in the early development of modern astronomy. In the early 17th century, under the reign of Emperor Rudolf II, it became the centre of astronomical research in Europe thanks to Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, who lived and worked here. It was in Prague that Kepler formulated his first two laws of planetary motion, based on Brahe’s precise observations. The city’s historic Astronomical Clock (built 1410) and its university, founded in 1348, further reflect Prague’s long-standing tradition of scientific scholarship.

Over the centuries, Prague continued contributing to scientific progress. Notable figures include Christian Doppler, associated with the Doppler effect, and František Nušl, co-founder of the Czech Astronomical Society and initiator of the observatory in Ondřejov, which today houses the Czech Republic’s largest optical telescope.

Today, Prague remains a vibrant centre for astronomy and space science. The Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences operates major facilities at Ondřejov Observatory, and collaborates internationally on cutting‑edge missions and telescopic projects.

Czech space research achieved several milestones—such as the first Czech‑built satellite Magion‑1 in 1978, astronaut Vladimír Remek becoming the first Czech in space, and more recently, advanced microsatellites.

The conference venue, Vila Lanna, is a grand Neo‑Renaissance villa, built between 1868 and 1872 by industrialist Vojtěch Lanna Jr., with interiors featuring frescoes by Viktor Barvitius and designs by Josef Mánes (historical sources).

How to reach the Vila Lanna

From Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG)

1) Public Transport (Recommended)

This route is reliable, affordable, and frequently used by both locals and visitors.

  1. From Terminal 1 or Terminals 2–3, board the trolleybus line 59 (every 3–10 minutes) bound for Nádraží Veleslavín (metro station on Line A).
  2. At Nádraží Veleslavín, transfer to green metro Line A and ride for three stops to Hradčanská.
  3. From Hradčanská, it’s about 500 m on foot (roughly 6–10 minutes) to reach Vila Lanna.

Total travel time from airport: about 35–40 minutes, including transfer stops;  40 CZK for a 90-minute ticket allowing transfers within the network.

Do not forget to validate your public transport ticket before entering.

2) Taxi

The official taxi service at Prague’s Václav Havel Airport is now operated exclusively by Uber Airport (prg.aero/en/taxi). You can book your ride either via the Uber app, through self‑service kiosks in the arrivals halls, or at staffed service counters. After ordering, your driver will meet you at the designated pick‑up zone immediately outside the terminal. This system ensures transparent, fixed pricing and regulated quality of service—fully managed under the airport’s official agreement with Uber (valid through 2028).

As a reliable alternative, you may also consider Bolt (via their app – bolt.eu/en) or AAA Taxi Airport transfers at aaataxi.cz/en/prague-airport-taxi—both are reputable services with upfront pricing.

For the journey from the airport to Vila Lanna, the typical fare is around 400–500 CZK, depending on traffic and service used.

⚠️ Important Warning

Please avoid accepting offers from unmarked or roadside drivers claiming to be „official taxis.“ These so-called “chasers” often approach passengers inside arrivals, wearing vests or signs but offering inflated prices or unofficial services. Many travelers have reported being significantly overcharged, sometimes doubling the expected fare.

From Prague Main Railway Station

1)  Tram + Walk
  1. Exit the station through the main entrance and follow signs to the Hlavní nádraží tram stop, which is located just outside on Bolzanova Street. (Turn right and go through the park.)
  2. Take tram number 26 (towards Divoká Šárka) and ride for nine stops, getting off at Hradčanská station.
(A single ride costs approximately 40 CZK, valid for both tram and metro transfers within the ticket’s validity period.)
  3. From Hradčanská, it’s a pleasant 6–10 minute walk (about 500 m) to Vila Lanna.

Make sure you validate your tram ticket as soon as you get on.

2) Metro Line C + Metro Line A + Walk
  1. From the railway station, enter Metro Line C (red line) at Hlavní nádraží and ride one stop to Muzeum.
  2. Transfer to Metro Line A (green line) and continue for four stops to Hradčanská.
  3. Walk approximately 500 m (6–10 min) to Vila Lanna.

Do not forget to validate your public transport ticket before entering the metro station area.

3) Taxi

You can also use taxi services to arrive at Villa Lanna (standard taxi or Uber, Bolt, etc. for example 😉 ). (Request an official receipt from the ride to minimise fraud. )

Prague Public Transport

Bus/metro/tram/trolleybus rides are subject to regular Prague public transport fares (including pre-paid tickets). Bus/metro/tram/trolleybus rides do not need to be booked in advance. Prague’s public transport runs on a proof-of-payment system. You must validate any paper ticket before entering a metro station or immediately after boarding a tram or bus, otherwise it is considered invalid.

If you have a paper single ticket (e.g. 40 CZK for 90 min), use a yellow validation machine (commonly located at the entrance to metro stations or on buses/trams) to stamp the ticket once—this prints the start time on the ticket and activates it. Do not enter the metro paid area without first stamping your ticket in the yellow validator—look for the white line on the floor and the yellow stampers nearby. Validate the ticket exactly once, on first usage—tampers or multiple validations will render it invalid.

You can purchase public transport tickets at yellow touchscreen vending machines, conveniently located at metro station entrances, major tram and bus stops, as well as in tourist information centres or newsagents throughout the city—including at Prague Airport and main train stations. These machines typically offer English language support and accept both coin and card payments.

Another option is to purchase a ticket on board a tram, bus or trolleybus via a contactless terminal (orange vending maschine). The ticket is then validated automatically, so no further stamping is required.

Typicaly you will need to purchase a public transport ticket for 40 CZK for this trip. The ticket is valid for 90 minutes.
Participants aged over 65 can verify their right to receive the free age-based fare/tariff through the use of any form of ID card or a passport.

Tickets can also be purchased via SMS or the Lítačka mobile app, which can also be used to search for the ideal public transport connection. The application is available for Android or iOS
